#MarshMadness day 15
What does this funky thing have to do with marshes?! Well, this is an amphipod, genus Crayngonyx. They inhabit springs (including cave springs), but also can be found in marshes!
In the weeds … a Solitary Sandpiper blends into the autumn reeds as it forages in a shallow pond.

#MarshMadness day 14
Well...ok we are back to a swamp not a marsh...sorry folks.
As an apology, have an alligator.
Alright, all you #wetland lovers - I'm digging all the #MarshMadness photos you're sharing, but I hope you're also preparing for #Swamptember and #Bogtober this fall and #Fenuary early next year!
Let's make this happen.
This #MarshMadness critter is a crimson marsh glider (Trithemis aurora). Dragonflies are some of the most effective predators on the planet, snatching prey right out of the air with an up to 97% success rate. Each of their four wings can operate independently, making them strong, agile fliers. They also utilize a trick called "motion camouflage." Instead of flying straight towards their target, they keep in line with its path (even anticipating future moves), making them appear stationary even as they approach.
This Bald Eagle pair voiced their displeasure at the smaller birds that were harassing their juvenile offspring.

A mini-marsh (temporary). Depending on the year, this ditch holds water long enough for frogs to spawn.
Iridescent … one of forty-six Glossy Ibis we counted in the reeds two years ago at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.
A Great Egret enjoys a leisurely stroll in the salt marsh at low tide.
