Hairy Woodpecker hangin' out waiting for their turn on the suet.

There were THREE here at once yesterday, and quite a kerfuffle ensued, and so I think this one was giving the larger one a wide berth

A medium sized woodpecker hangs vertically on the bark of a tree. It's a black and white bird, black on top and clean white on the bottom, with white flecks on the wings. Its head is striped in black and white, with a red patch visible at the rear. It has a sharp, black bill.

A Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) was on a pecan (Carya illinoinensis) tree in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on January 25, 2025. These woodpeckers drill horizontal rows of small holes in the wood. The tree sap in the holes traps insects which the bird comes back to eat later.

Die Temperaturen werden milder
und der Buntspecht meldet sich
nach längerer Abwesenheit wieder
zurück.

Ich werte das als ein gutes Zeichen, und gute Zeichen können wir gebrauchen.

Männlicher Buntspecht zwischen den kräfigen Ästen des Tulpenbaums. Wir sehen ihn von der rechten Seite. Den Kopf hält er ein wenig nach rechts geneigt. Im Hintergrund verschwommene Grau- und Grüntöne.

Herr Buntspecht sitzt noch an derselben Stelle im Baum, hat sich aber nun mit der Vorderseite zur Kamera gedreht und hat den Kopf ganz weit nach rechts gewandt.

The female, red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) was around yesterday morning. I found her presence intriguing because of the way she moved her head sharply in different directions, reminding me of Madonna's "Vogue" video. You can tell she is female by the feathers on her head, which do not cover the entire top like those of a male.

A Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) was standing on the edge of a concrete birdbath with head raised to swallow water in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on January 23, 2025. The bird bath is heated to prevent the water from freezing and wildlife had already consumed most of the water. All other nearby water was frozen. I filled the birdbath after making this photo.
