Towards #sustainable space #research in #France

During the 2024's quinquennial scientific roadmap of @cnes, a specific group worked on setting recommendations to decrease the #environmental footprint of #space #science activities.

Our correspondence to @NatureAstronomy highlights the efforts of the french space research to move towards sustainability. It relies on two complementary methods: decarbonisation and frugality.

Once we simply *cannot* continue to travel so far and so fast with so much stuff, we will realize that rebuilding our population centers to support great #density with greater #dignity is sane, sensible, satisfying, and #sustainable.

#Urbanism IS the future, whether you like it or not. We can do this the right way, or we can do it the painful way. It's up to you, but the choice will be made, with or without you.

"Advocates say federal government has a crucial role funding environmental projects

"One group that's been waiting on funding is #CollaborativeEarth. The organization is helping #NativeAmerican tribes in #Oklahoma develop more #sustainable grazing practices and small #farmers in the southeast reforest waterways to prevent #flooding and store carbon pollution.

"'It's strange that the payment of an invoice could make you wonder about the future of a democracy, but that's exactly what it feels like,' says Aaron Hirsh, organization lead at Collaborative Earth.

"Unless payments restart, Hirsh says his group is weeks away from having to lay people off — and potentially having to shut down entirely.

"'I don't know when we're going to get started again on finding these kinds of solutions that can benefit local communities as well as #ecosystems,' Hirsh says. 'This is the sort of funding that can support that kind of innovation. That's what it was supposed to do. And without it, I don't think we find those solutions.'

"Like a lot of organizations, Collaborative Earth doesn't receive grant funding in big upfront payments. Instead, it's compensated by the government for past expenses, like paying workers and buying equipment. In other cases, organizations can withdraw federal funding to cover about a week's worth of expenses. Unless groups have large cash reserves, even a brief interruption in government funding can cause problems.

"'When these projects get frozen and you let all that staff go, you lose momentum, and you might lose the project permanently, because the people can't afford to sit and wait,' says Campaigne of the #SouthernEnvironmentalLawCenter. 'You're between a rock and a hard place of trying to stay committed to the work that you are dedicated to and feeding your family.' "

🫘 #Pulses are the future! Do you know why?

#Legumes can fix nitrogen from the air, thanks to a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria.
This makes their seeds a protein-rich food option, and contributes to their many advantages :

🌍 #Sustainable crops: strengthen the resilience of farming systems while promoting #ClimateChange mitigation and #biodiversity

🫀 Nutritious and healthy: high protein, fiber, vitamin and antioxidant content, low-fat

💰 Low production and buying costs: increase #foodsecurity

🥗 Interesting culinary properties for more fun dishes: colorful, unique flavors and textures

Let’s put more pulses on our plates! 🍽️💚

"Guided by #agroecological principles, #SítioTarumã have transformed the land through #sustainable practices..."

Short description of your place and practices

"Sítio Tarumã is both our home and a living project dedicated to reforestation and the preservation of the #AtlanticForest. Guided by agroecological principles, we have transformed the land through sustainable practices, planting over 2,500 native and fruit-bearing trees since 2013. What was once degraded pasture now thrives as a dynamic #ecosystem, demonstrating how humanity can #coexist in harmony with nature."

I’m experimenting with olla #gardening. I’ve filled a low-fired (porous) pot that I made with water and buried it in the soil with my seedlings. This pot wasn’t made specifically to be an olla, but any porous pot should work. Ollas slowly release water into dry soil, and roots pull it in through osmosis.

Olla gardening conserves water, reduces irrigation frequency, promotes deep root growth, and supports #sustainable, low-maintenance plant care.

Can anyone point me to resources to learn more about:
- sustainable / openhardware electronics
- "homemade" electronic components (logic gates, resistors, etc.)(CC @North)
Basically if society would end tomorrow, how could we re-build our current technology without making the same mistakes ?
I think about sustainably living with nature in this scenario while also having electric power and e.g. computers.

Please boost for further reach.

Five years of no flying
✈️ ❌ ➡️ 🚅 ✅

5 years ago, I realised that my #academic travels were emitting way too much #greenhouse #gas #GHG (up to 20 t #CO2 / yr) and hence that my #professional activity was not #sustainable. I thus decided to completely ban air #travel (#plane) and travel mainly by #train within #Europe.

5 years later (i.e. now), my professional travels' #carbonfootprint dropped by **a factor 50**, without impacting my #publication records (compared to 2017 - 2019).

I wrote a post for the #blog of @a4e about my experience. Check it out: astronomersforplanet.earth/fiv
