The number of gay US adults is closest to the population of South Carolina, which is home to 5.5 million people.

From 2023 to ’24, the number of gay US adults surpassed the populations of Oklahoma, Oregon, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Alabama.

US Palestinian college activist Mahmoud Khalil has been illegally arrested by ICE over the weekend.

Khalil is a green card holder and there is no known legal justification for his arrest. This appears to have been an arbitrary arrest at the direction the White House. Last I heard Khalil has not been allowed to speak to a lawyer. He has been transfered over 1000 miles to ICE detention in Louisiana.

Today I saw these old style #camellias while walking in downtown #BatonRouge #Louisiana. I was struck by the rose like flowers. I thought they would be a good topic for #bloomscrolling. Since they are cultivated, they probably are #gardening material as well. Camellias are such great flowers, because they are evergreen and bloom in the late winter when little else is growing. #Bromeliad fans might notice a few sprigs of #Tillandsia growing on the stems of the bush.

The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) will no longer encourage mass vaccination. It has also banned vaccination events, as well as the promotion of vaccines by all its employees. All this with a measles outbreak in neighboring Texas that is affecting only unvaccinated people.

"I'm really worried about measles especially, because it's the most infectious disease—period," said vaccine specialist Dr. Paul Offit. "And it's going to seek out those who aren't vaccinated."

In January 1811, nearly 500 enslaved men and women fought for their freedom at the Woodland plantation in LaPlace, La. It was America's largest slave revolt. Last month, about 80 people gathered to commemorate that event, dancing, singing and worshipping together over plates of red rice and beans. Woodland is now owned by twin Black sisters, Jo and Joy Banner, who run the Descendants Project, a community organization. Their mission? To honor the courage of past revolutionaries, and provide strength for those facing modern challenges. Here's more from Capital B News.

🚨 Disability rights are under attack in 17 states! 🚨

There’s a lawsuit trying to get rid of Section 504, the law that protects disabled people in schools, workplaces, and public spaces. If they succeed, it means:

❌ Schools wouldn’t have to provide accommodations (no extra test time for ADHD, no wheelchair access, no diabetes care in class).
❌ Workplaces wouldn’t have to adjust for disabilities (no remote work, no flexible scheduling, no accessibility requirements).
❌ Public spaces could ignore accessibility needs (buildings, buses, and services wouldn’t have to be usable for disabled people).

📍 These 17 states are trying to gut 504 protections:
Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia.

If you live in one of these states, contact your state reps & governor! If this lawsuit succeeds, other states could follow, or it could reach the Supreme Court and hurt everyone.
